Surprising Discovery of Oil in Noble and Monroe Counties

Doug Brandon, of the Noble  County Historical Society, will explain the discovery  of oil during the early 1800s in Noble and Monroe counties Tuesday, Oct. 27 beginning at 2 pm at the Monroe County Library in Woodsfield, OH.  Although it is a vital part of our economy today, oil and gas was a nuisance in the early 1800’s as more people were interested in salt production.  A number of the salt wells produced some thick oil and gas, but it was usually discarded as useless.  Plan to attend and learn how this useless substance became an integral part of today’s local economy. Please RSVP at 740-472-1954. You do not need to RSVP to attend.
